My 2 year old doesn’t listen to me – what do I do?

August 23, 2021

Dear Maxine,  I’m really struggling with my two year old. He doesn’t do anything I tell him to. I feel like the world’s worst parent because I don’t have any control over him. I can tell him not to do something 15 times and each time he’ll stop and then go straight back to it. Sometimes,…

I’m always shouting at my child – what do I do?

August 16, 2021

Dear Maxine,  I feel like a terrible parent. Recently, I have been so shouty with my child. She is just doing my head in. I feel like nothing I do for her is right and we’ve totally lost the connection we used to have. She’s angry all the time, which is making me angry all…

Three steps to managing parenting overwhelm plus easing mental load

August 9, 2021

Dear Maxine, I love being a dad, it’s brilliant. I love my son and my partner and I want to be there for them as much as possible. But I am exhausted. I have our baby in the morning, go to work, come home, relieve my partner and then it’s bedtime/tidying time and I’m wiped…

Feeling like a fun sponge now we’re ‘free’

August 2, 2021

Dear Maxine, Now that lockdown is easing and people can go out and do all the things they used to be able to, I’m starting to feel really boring and like I’m always putting a downer on plans, particularly with my friends who don’t have children yet. They are all really understanding and flexible, but…

Worried about your child?

Worried about a friend, family member or loved one?

Remember!

While this is similar in style to therapy, this is for education and reflection only and should not be used as a replacement for a relationship with a mental health professional. If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed at any point while you read this, please take the time to stop and take care of yourself, returning only if you feel able. You can also download our guide to managing your feelings below.

I don’t know your family or your situation. As you read this, notice what’s coming up for you and be kind to yourself.

Nobody gets this right all of the time. It’s all about trying and learning. If you want to, as feels right to you.

“Clinical Psychologist Dr Maxine Campion explains: ‘resilience does not mean carrying on regardless, it does not mean pushing through and getting over it, and it does not mean internalising. Resilience is about being adaptive. It is about being aware and getting support when you need it, and being able to notice your emotions and respond to them appropriately and effectively – at the right time’. This is constant work and not something to try and cultivate when you’re already burned out.”
